OAS SECRETARY GENERAL’S STATEMENT ON NICARAGUA

  April 27, 2005

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States is following recent events in Nicaragua, including developments in the political situation, with the greatest attention and concern.

Speaking from Quito, Ecuador, the Acting Secretary General, Ambassador Luigi R. Einaudi, today emphasized “that the practice of democracy requires that all government and political institutions, and citizens in general, observe law and order and the constitutional system and strictly adhere to democratic values and practices.” Ambassador Einaudi condemned the recent acts of violence in Nicaragua, which run contrary to the principles and values enshrined in the OAS Charter and in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

The Acting Secretary General urged all political and social forces in Nicaragua to resolve their socio-economic and political differences in a peaceful manner and as expeditiously as possible, in keeping with the national Constitution. Einaudi renewed his appeal for dialogue and negotiation, mechanisms he proposed in October 2004 when he visited Nicaragua together with the Chair of the Permanent Council. He also offered the good offices of the General Secretariat to facilitate such dialogue.
