OAS Mission to the Elections of Territorial Authorities in Colombia Begins its Deployment

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) to the elections of territorial authorities in Colombia, led by the Mexican Leonardo Valdés Zurita, will begin its work in the field tomorrow, observing the simulation of vote counting, digitalization and transmission of results ahead of the October 27 vote.

The Mission is composed of 30 observers and specialists who will be deployed in 15 departments in the country and the capital district to learn about the process in all of its stages. The specialists will carry out a substantive analysis of various key elements: electoral organization and technology, women´s political participation, electoral violence, campaign finance, and electoral justice.

The Mission will meet with electoral authorities, government representatives, candidates, academics, and civil society to hear their perspectives on the process. Following the elections, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations.

This will be the nineteenth Mission the OAS has deployed in Colombia. The Mission´s deployment was possible due to the financial contributions of Germany, Brazil, the United States, France, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Panama and Switzerland.
