Preliminary Visit of OAS Electoral Observation Mission to El Salvador to Learn about Preparations for the Presidential Elections of February
December 10, 2018
The Chief of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the presidential elections on February 3rd in El Salvador, Uruguayan diplomat Juan Pablo Corlazzoli, today began a preliminary visit to the country to learn about the progress made in the organization of the elections.
This morning, he signed, along with the President of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Julio Olivo, the agreement that establishes the procedures for the electoral observation. "It is an honor to be able to follow El Salvador once again in such an important moment for a country as the celebration of presidential elections," said Corlazzoli, who also led the Mission deployed by the OAS last March for the legislative and municipal elections. This will be the sixteenth election that the Organization has observed in the country.
Within the framework of this preliminary visit, the Mission will hold meetings with the different actors in the electoral process, including government and electoral authorities, political parties and candidates, representatives of civil society and the international community.
The Electoral Observation Mission of the OAS will begin to be deployed in mid-January and will be composed of experts in electoral organization and technology, campaign financing, and electoral justice, among other areas. The Mission will also have regional coordinators and observers who will be deployed throughout the national territory to observe the development of the electoral process in the field.
