OAS SECRETARY GENERAL EXPRESSES SORROW OVER DEATH OF POPE JOHN PAUL II

  April 2, 2005

The Acting Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luigi R. Einaudi , said today that the passing of Pope John Paul II represents a loss not only to Roman Catholics, but to all those who value peace, freedom and human dignity.

“This is a day of mourning for all the OAS member states, many of which have had the honor of receiving the pontiff during one of his many visits abroad,” Einaudi said. “More than any other pope before him, John Paul II made it his mission to be the personable face of the Church around the world.”

Einaudi noted that the Holy See has been a permanent observer of the OAS since 1978, and the following year – on October 6, 1979 – Pope John Paul II visited OAS headquarters in Washington. The pontiff spoke to the OAS Permanent Council in a special protocolary session, held in the Hall of the Americas, then addressed thousands of people gathered outside in the Aztec Garden, speaking in Spanish for the benefit of those of Latin American origin.

“Throughout his long life and distinguished papacy, John Paul II enriched the lives of people of all faiths,” Einaudi said. “The world has lost a great statesman and man of peace.”
