OAS and Electoral Tribunal of the Federal District of Mexico Sign Cooperation Agreement

  February 23, 2012

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal District of Mexico today signed an agreement to strengthen their cooperation and improve their exchange of experiences.

The document was signed by Ambassador Hugo de Zela, Chief of Staff to the Secretary General and currently in charge of the OAS Secretariat for Political Affairs, and Judge Aidé Barceinas Macedo, of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal District of Mexico. OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza was present at the ceremony, held at the headquarters of hemispheric Organization in Washington, DC.

With the signing of this agreement, the Electoral Tribunal of Mexico City and the OAS, through its Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation, seek to establish an efficient mechanism for the transmission of knowledge in order to develop both institutions, and to jointly carry out activities on behalf of the courts in electoral matters throughout the region.

Ambassador De Zela said that the commitment is in addition to a number of other important agreements on electoral issues reached by the General Secretariat, with virtually all countries of the Hemisphere. "Thus, the General Secretariat is fulfilling the mandate of Member States to work for strengthening democracy in the region," said the Chief of Staff to the Secretary General.

Judge Aidé Macedo Barceinas expressed satisfaction regarding the agreement with the hemispheric organization and said she was sure that "the signing of this instrument will be of mutual benefit." She stated that "to the Tribunal, it is something that will provide valuable elements that will strengthen our institutional capacities on issues of electoral jurisdiction."
