OAS SECRETARY GENERAL TRAVELS TO HAITI

  February 14, 2006

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, will travel to Haiti tomorrow, Wednesday, to learn firsthand about the difficulties that have arisen in the days following the February 7 elections.

“We plan to cooperate with the national authorities and with the international community to seek peaceful and democratic solutions to the situation that has developed in these last few days,” Insulza said.

The Secretary General, who will arrive around midday in Port-au-Prince, traveling from Santo Domingo, called on the Haitian people to remain calm, recalling the peaceful, civic spirit with which they went to the polls last week.

During his visit to Haiti, Insulza and the United Nations Representative in Haiti, Juan Gabriel Valdés, will meet with interim government authorities, leaders of various political parties and of civil society, as well as with diplomatic representatives of countries that have closely followed the situation in Haiti.

The OAS has worked intensely during recent years to support the Haitian people, through its Special Mission to Strengthen Democracy in Haiti, established in 2002. In the months leading up to the elections, the OAS provided specialized technical support to help build the electoral registry and design the electronic vote tabulation system.

The OAS Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General, Albert R. Ramdin, were in Haiti last week to witness the voting. Last Friday, February 10, the OAS Permanent Council affirmed in a statement that “free and fair elections are but a first step towards strengthening democracy and the rule of law and promoting economic development in Haiti.”
