OAS Electoral Observation Mission in El Salvador Begins Final Deployment

The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in El Salvador, which will be led by the lawyer and former Bolivian Foreign Minister Gustavo Fernández Saavedra, designated by the Secretary General of the hemispheric institution, José Miguel Insulza, today began its final deployment before the presidential elections of February 2.
The Mission will be made up of 62 observers and will be present in the 14 departments of El Salvador. The EOM/OAS will directly observe the electoral process and, following the mandates established in the Inter-American Democratic Charter, will address various issues such as electoral organization, electoral technology, legal frameworks, political financing and political analysis, among others.
During the week before the election, the Chief of Mission expects to meet with the President and the Plenary of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and the five candidates for the Presidency of the Republic, with whom he previously met during a visit in December. He will also hold meetings with other authorities and actors in the process.
The Chief of Mission, Fernández Saavedra, has served in various roles for his country, including Ambassador to Brazil; Consul General in Chile; Minister Secretary for Integration; Minister of the Presidency; and three times Foreign Minister. Moreover, he was a candidate for Vice President of Bolivia in 1989 and held various positions at the international level.
The Electoral Observation Missions of the OAS are recognized as a key tool for political cooperation that contribute to strengthening electoral processes in the Hemisphere and promote democratic governance. Through them, the OAS works with government authorities and the general public to contribute to the fairness, transparency, and fairness of the electoral process.
