TURKEY BOOSTS OAS PROGRAMS WITH FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION
January 28, 2003
Turkey’s Permanent Observer, Ambassador Faruk Logoglu, today presented the Organization of American States (OAS) with contributions intended to boost various programs of the hemispheric Organization.
During a brief ceremony, Ambassador Logoglu presented to Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi Turkish contributions to the Organization’s Inter-American Drugs Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), Américas Magazine, Sustainable Development and Environment Unit and the Young Americas Business Trust.
The Turkish diplomat said his government’s latest contribution—which he described as “modest”—reflects the commitment of Turkey’s people and government to solidarity and cooperation with the people of the Americas. He said his nation is very proud of its association with and observer status in the OAS. “Turkey is a country that takes an interest not just in its region, not just in Europe, but also is very much interested in its relations with the Americas,” he explained.
For his part, Assistant Secretary General Einaudi expressed appreciation for the gift, adding that the contribution reflects Turkey’s understanding of the Organization “on a variety of fronts.” Noting the very important work being carried out by the OAS subsidiary bodies that will benefit from this gift, Ambassador Einaudi singled out the contribution to Américas, “quintessentially a magazine of this Hemisphere’s culture,” saying the support “says a great deal about the nature of Turkey’s interest.”
Einaudi handed over the respective contributions to CICAD Executive Secretary David Beall; Américas Magazine Editor James Kiernan; Young Americas Business Trust CEO Roy Thomasson; and Richard Meganck, Director of the Unit for Sustainable Development and Environment.
Thomasson then presented the Turkish Permanent Observer with a certificate, expressing appreciation for the support.
