OAS Secretary General Participated in UN High-Level Retreat

  January 13, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, participated in a high-level retreat of the United Nations (UN) held in New York City from January 11-12 with leaders of regional organizations and other multinational entities. The goal of the meeting was to find mechanisms of cooperation to establish and maintain peace, prevent conflicts and manage crisis.

The meeting was chaired by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and attended by the heads of guest organizations. It was the first time that the world’s most important multinational organizations met to discuss cooperation programs and ways to improve their coordination.

“We reached important agreements, we exchanged plenty of information, and we held several discussions regarding the instruments needed to work towards solving conflicts and controversies, and regarding the promotion of different projects,” said Secretary General Insulza. “The OAS has a long-standing and very close relationship with the United Nations but our relationship with the other organizations is only beginning.”
