Statement from the OAS General Secretariat on the Political Situation in Colombia
February 8, 2024
The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) demands that attempts by different political actors to damage the democratic process in Colombia be abandoned and considers it essential to guarantee that President Gustavo Petro, who was duly elected on June 19 of 2022, completes his presidential term, which began on August 7, 2022. In this sense, the General Secretariat condemns and repudiates the threats to interrupt the constitutional mandate of President Petro.
The OAS General Secretariat requests all state actors and institutions to respect democratic principles and that constitutional governability be assured to the elected authorities, respecting the political rights of the people who have been elected and those who elected them. State institutions must function in an environment based on the principles of democracy and respect for the rule of law, as a fundamental basis for the peace and stability of the country.
Furthermore, the OAS General Secretariat highlights the vital importance of appointing a new Attorney General, in order to provide constitutional and political certainty to the country.
