OAS Opens Online Discussion for Young People to Contribute Ideas on Democracy and Entrepreneurship
November 9, 2012
The Organization of American States (OAS) will inaugurate, on Monday, November 12, the Virtual Forum “Youth in Action for Democracy and Entrepreneurship,” as part of the activities leading up to the Youth in Action Conference to be held on December 4 at the headquarters of the organization in Washington, DC.
The Forum, whose web address is: http://svc.summit-americas.org/ seeks to create a space for the young people of the Americas to discuss and exchange views on strengthening democracy and entrepreneurship in the region, taking into account that nearly 45 percent of those in the region less than 18 years old live in poverty and are the most affected by the lack of access to basic services like education, health, a safe environment and other essential requirements for the development of a life with dignity. The exchange of experiences and lessons learned, and in particular, innovative initiatives involving young people, will also be part of the discussion in the online forum.
The opinions and comments on the forum will be used in a report that will contribute to the debate over the activities of the Youth Conference on Tuesday, December 4, which will in turn produce a document with recommendations to be presented at a special meeting of OAS Permanent Council. The virtual forum will remain open until December 15 to keep collecting ideas.
Forum participants will initiate discussions with questions related to the role of youth in a representative democracy; youth, human rights and fundamental freedoms; youth participation in elections and the political system; and the use of new technologies, among other topics. Issues related to entrepreneurship and youth initiatives to promote economic and social development of the countries of the region will also play a prominent role.
