Members of Parliament from South America to Discuss in Montevideo Legislative Trends in Public Security

  August 16, 2010

The Organization of American States (OAS) will host a seminar August 18 and 19, 2010, titled, “Legislation and Public Security Policies: Towards a State Policy,” in Montevideo, Uruguay. Participants will include prominent Members of Parliament from 10 countries in South America.

The objective of this meeting is to strengthen the capacities of parliamentarians to update legislation on public security, as well as its role in monitoring the implementation of public security policies.

The meeting will also look at the principal regional legislative trends on matters concerning public security. Specific proposals that complement participants’ interests will be forthcoming, the ultimate goal being the creation of a set of reference tools to contribute to parliamentary efforts in this area.

The regional seminar is being organized by the OAS Department of Public Security in collaboration with the Department of State Modernization and Governance and the Executive Secretariat of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The Vice-Presidency of the Republic and the Presidency of the General Assembly of the Legislative Power of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay also have supported the seminar.
