OAS to Host Dialogue in Support of Freedom of Conscience, Religion or Belief and Pluralism in the Americas

  September 27, 2023

The Organization of American States (OAS) will host the “Dialogue in Support of Freedom of Conscience, Religion or Belief and Pluralism in the Americas” this Friday September 29, 2023 at 9:30 EDT in the Padilha Vidal Room of the OAS General Secretariat Building, 1889 F Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.

Freedom of religion or belief is multi-dimensional and intersects with other fundamental freedoms, including the freedom to change one’s religion or beliefs or hold no religion at all. Regional governments pledged to increase efforts to ensure inclusion and diversity in all aspects of governance in the June 2022 Inter-American Action Plan on Democratic Governance adopted by Heads of State and Government at the Ninth Summit of the Americas. Additionally, OAS member states agreed at the 52nd OAS General Assembly to organize and participate in global, regional, and subregional conferences and events that commemorate or promote respect for the right to freedom of conscience and religion or belief and to share any conclusions and best practices discussed during these events.

To this end, the Permanent Missions of the USA, Brazil, Canada and Chile to the OAS, in collaboration with the OAS General Secretariat, through the Department of Social Inclusion of the Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity, are organizing this dialogue featuring a high-level panel with U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom Rashad Hussain, UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Religion or Belief Nazila Ghanea, other multilateral stakeholders, and civil society representatives during which they will discuss how States should address multidimensional discrimination experienced by marginalized communities, including minority faith and spiritual communities, and many other questions.
