OAS Participates in High-Level Event on Displaced Persons in Central America and Mexico
September 20, 2022
The Organization of American States (OAS) will participate tomorrow in an international solidarity event to strengthen protection and promote solutions for forcibly displaced persons and host communities in Central America and Mexico.
As the current Chair of the Regional Integrated Framework for Protection and Solutions Support Platform (MIRPS), the Government of Canada is co-hosting the event with the United States, and in collaboration with the Government of Honduras. The objective is to strengthen protection and promote solutions for forcibly displaced persons and host communities in Central America and Mexico. The event is parallel to the United Nations General Assembly in New York and will take place this Wednesday.
This Solidarity Event is an opportunity to reaffirm political commitment to the MIRPS Support Platform, expand the Support Platform to include new members and mobilize resources (political, financial, technical and in-kind commitments). In addition to the OAS, there will be high-level participation from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), as well as ministerial-level participation from the seven MIRPS States Parties, MIRPS Support Platform States, and other interested States. There will also be high-level representatives from international financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society, among others.
The MIRPS, formed by the governments of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Panama, is a regional contribution to the Global Compact on Refugees to strengthen protection and promote solutions for refugees and displaced populations, to address the underlying causes of these movements of people and to promote a stable environment that ensures security, economic development and prosperity in this region. The MIRPS has a Technical Secretariat comprised of UNHCR and the OAS, through the Department of Social Inclusion of the Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity.
