CICTE of the OAS Holds Annual Meeting Focused on Prevention of Terrorism in Times of Pandemic
September 24, 2020
The Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold TOMORROW, Friday, September 25, its Twentieth Ordinary Period of Sessions, in a virtual meeting. At this meeting, CICTE will take stock of the work carried out the previous year and will establish the work plan for the 2020-2021 period, which should be developed to face the new challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has generated in the field of prevention of terrorism.
For this reason, the CICTE Secretariat will present the proposed 2020-2021 work plan with a pragmatic approach that is sensitive to the current global situation. The Committee's programs will be focused on providing support to member states in the following priority areas:
Cybersecurity
Implementation of resolution 1540, particularly aspects related to biosafety and biosecurity
Prevention of violent extremism
Air, land and sea border security
Crowded spaces security
Technical assistance against the financing of terrorism.
In addition, CICTE's work plan foresees a special effort to support the development or strengthening of tools for the exchange of information and/or best practices in matters within the Committee's competence.
The 34 member states of the OAS are members of CICTE, the only regional entity whose purpose is to prevent and combat terrorism in the Americas. CICTE encourages cooperation and dialogue among member states to counter terrorism, in accordance with the principles of the OAS Charter, with the Inter-American Convention against Terrorism, and with full respect for the sovereignty of the countries, the rule of law and international law.
The opening session of the CICTE meeting can be followed live on Facebook.
