OAS to Host Workshop with Experts on “Extracontinental Migration in the Americas”

The Special Committee on Migration Issues of the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold a workshop on “Extracontinental Migration in the Americas” on Tuesday, April 6, from 11:00 to 17:30 EST (16:00- 22:30 GMT) in the Simón Bolívar Hall of OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The workshop is organized with the collaboration of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and will feature experts on migratory issues, including: Juan Carlos Murillo and Anne Greene from UNHCR; Richard Scott, IOM Regional Representative for North America and the Caribbean; Laurence Hart, Chief of Mission of the IOM in Libya; Ernesto Rodríguez, Director of Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM); Mario Zamora, Director of the General Direction for Migration and Immigration of Costa Rica; María Cristina González, Director of Panama’s National Immigration Service; Luis Agusti, Director of International and Social Affairs and Chair of the National Commission for Refugees of Argentina, and Araceli Azuara, Program Manager of the Migration and Development Program (MiDE) of the OAS Department of Social Development and Employment.

The objectives of the workshop are to: analyze the background, magnitude and impact of irregular extracontinental migration; exchange experiences about the responses of different countries and international organizations to this type of irregular flows from within and outside the region; and promote dialogue and cooperation on this topic among the Member States of the Organization.
