Specialists on Firearms Trafficking to Meet at OAS

The XII Meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Inter-American Convention against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials (CIFTA) will be held Friday, April 15, at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC.
During the meeting, the States Parties to the CIFTA will converse on the activities carried out to implement the Convention, with particular attention to the handling and destruction of weapons as well as firearms marking. The agenda also includes a live demonstration of the firearms marking equipment the OAS is donating to several of its Member States.
CIFTA was adopted in 1997, and it is the first binding treaty on the matter. As of today, all Member States have signed the Convention, and 30 have ratified it.
The event will be held between 9:00 EDT (13:00 GMT) and 17:30 EDT (21:30 GMT) in the Simón Bolívar Hall inside the OAS Main Building.
