OAS and Trinidad and Tobago to Hold Press Conference on Preparations for VIII Americas Competitiveness Forum

  May 8, 2014

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago will hold a press conference, this Friday, May 9, in Port of Spain to discuss the preparations for the 8th Americas Competitiveness Forum, to be held in the city October, 8-10.

During the event, Bhoendradatt Tewarie, Minister of Planning and Sustainable Development of Trinidad and Tobago and Chair Pro Tempore of the Inter-American Competitiveness Network (RIAC) 2014, and Maryse Robert, Director of the OAS Department of Economic and Social Development, will discuss preparations for the Forum, which has as its theme and central focus “The Human Imagination at Work: Driving Competitiveness, Powering Innovation,” as well as the meeting of the RIAC Steering Committee on Friday in Port of Spain and the RIAC Task Force on Innovation and Entrepreneurship to be held Saturday.

The Americas Competitiveness Forum is the premier medium in the western hemisphere bringing together governments, business leaders and academics to discuss innovative methods to achieve economic competitiveness and promote innovation in the Caribbean and the Americas. It arose from the recognition of the need to promote trade, entrepreneurialism, address immigration reforms and highlight the importance of investments in Research & Development (R&D) as a key tool for competitiveness. It is also meant to address the fact that the Latin American and Caribbean region lags behind the rest of the Americas in terms of income equality and the level of investment that occurs in R&D.

The members of RIAC are the Competitiveness Authorities and Councils of the countries of the Americas, which are supported in their work by institutions such as the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Compete Caribbean Program, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) of the United Nations, the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils (FGCC), International Training Centre for Local Actors (CIFAL), TEC de Monterrey and the World Bank, among others.
