THE OAS PERMANENT COUNCIL WILL HOST PRESIDENT OF URUGUAY, TABARÉ VÁZQUEZ

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will host the President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Mr. Tabaré Vázquez, during a Protocolary Meeting on Thursday Sept. 17, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. EDT.

An oncologist by profession, President Tabaré Vázquez was elected during the first round of national elections on Oct. 31, 2004 and took office for a period of five years on March 1, 2005.

Since 1994, Vazquez has acted as Chairman of the Frente Amplio political party. In 1989 he was elected Mayor of Montevideo, beginning 15 years of a leftist government in the Uruguayan capital and becoming a distinguished figure in national politics. He was also a member of the National Congress of Mayors (1990-1994) and served as its President in 1993.

Before his appearance at the Council Meeting, the Uruguayan president will meet privately with OAS Secretary General, Mr. Jose Miguel Insulza.
