During two separate seminars to be held this month at the Organization of American States (OAS), leading experts will address the effects of environmental degradation and its impact on human health as well as the urgent need to promote economic-environment partnerships, through emerging market-driven opportunities.
The two events, “From mandates to actions: Advancing Payments for Ecological Services in the Americas,” and “Innovations in Avian Influenza Preparedness,” will bring together specialists from the region in order to raise consciousness on the these two important issues as well as to build partnerships among Member States and the general public.
OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza will open the Avian Flu seminar on November 14, and the Assistant Secretary General, Albert R. Ramdin, will inaugurate the November 7 discussion on Payments for Ecological Services in the Americas.
The OAS, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the United States Department of Homeland Security, and other academic institutions are presenting the seminar series focusing on avian flu. This event highlights the commitment from the region’s governments to further dialogue and cooperation to promote and protect human health and the environment.
The Payments for Ecological Services in the Americas seminar will study new financing opportunities for developing countries, to help address poverty, environmental degradation, and climate change. Currently, there are several of these active programs in place in the Americas. The objective of the seminar is to further inform Member States about these types of approach, and to advance the theory behind Payments for Ecosystem Services.
Both seminars will be webcast live over the Internet(www.oas.org).
