OAS to Host Conference on “The Responsibility to Protect in the Americas”

The Organization of American States (OAS) will organize, together with the Stanley Foundation, a conference on “The Responsibility to Protect in the Americas,” this Thursday, March 21 at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT) at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.

The conference will focus on the responsibility that States have affirmed to employ all possible means to protect their own and other countries´ citizens from war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide under the norm of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Specifically, the discussion will seek answers to the question “Is it time to renew the discussion on the principle and application of R2P in the Americas?”

The event will include presentations by the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, and the Chairman of the Board of the Stanley Foundation, Brian Hanson, as well as two discussion panels on various aspects of the R2P concept.

The meeting will be broadcast live on the OAS Website and the OAS Facebook page.
