OAS Unveils Access to Information and Public Participation Mechanisms for Sustainable Development in the Dominican Republic

The Organization of American States (OAS), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic and the Secretariat for Environmental Matters of the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), will hold from March 12 to 13, 2014, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a workshop on “Mechanisms of Participation and Access to Information for Sustainable Development,” intended for government officials, civil society representatives, and other key stakeholders.
The objective of the workshop, coordinated by the OAS Department of Sustainable Development, is to promote access to information and facilitate the participation of all sectors of society in existing public participation mechanisms at the national and regional levels. The workshop is open to the press.
Within that context, a Discussion on Public Participation in Sustainable Development, intended for officials of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, will also take place. At that time, ideas and experiences on public participation for sustainable development will be shared, and the Inter-American Strategy for the promotion of public participation in decision-making for sustainable development will be presented. At that event, which will be closed to the press, the participants will discuss the various mechanisms of participation available at the national and regional levels, as well as the requirements to access them, their scope and procedures. Recommendations on the manual/guide that is being prepared on public participation mechanisms available in the Dominican Republic will also be made.
The training will be attended by representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as academics and civil society organizations. The workshop takes place within the framework of the project "Strengthening Public Participation Mechanisms for Sustainable Development," which seeks to implement the Inter-American Strategy for Public Participation in Decision-Making for Sustainable Development (ISP) adopted by the OAS member states.
