  March 9, 2006

The economist Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of the United Nations Millennium Project, will speak March 14 at the Organization of American States (OAS) on “New Approaches to Economic Directions in Latin America.” His address will be the eleventh in the OAS Lecture Series of the Americas.

Sachs is Director of The Earth Institute and the Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He serves as Special Advisor to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals, the internationally agreed targets for reducing extreme poverty, disease and hunger by the year 2015. He is well known for advising governments around the world on economic reforms and for his work with international agencies to promote poverty reduction, disease control and debt reduction for poor countries. His most recent book is “The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time.”

Jeffrey Sachs will take questions from the media and the audience immediately following his presentation, which will be transmitted live via satellite and on the OAS Web site (www.oas.org). President Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Republic will participate in the event from his country, via videoconference.

The Lecture Series of the Americas was created by the OAS Permanent Council to promote democratic principles and values in the countries of the hemisphere by hosting conferences with internationally known speakers on key issues of the hemispheric agenda, such as the strengthening of democracy, human rights, social development, hemispheric security and the fight against poverty. The conferences are being held thanks to a financial contribution from Peru’s San Martín de Porres University and support from the governments of the People’s Republic of China and the Hellenic Republic.
