OAS Telecommunications Commission to Debate Broadband and Internet Access in Latin America and the Caribbean at its Sixth Assembly in Santo Domingo

The Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will meet from February 10 to 13 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with the participation of more than 200 representatives from the public and private sectors to discuss access to broadband and internet in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Strategic Plan of the organization for the 2014-2018 period.
On Monday, February 10, a High Level Strategic Dialogue will be held will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the Dominican capital in which senior government officials from the region and representatives of the private sector and academia will meet to exchange information, best practices, visions and perspectives on the current and future state of access to broadband and the internet in the region, its prospects for development, and how it can help boost the economic development of the countries of the Americas. The dialogue will also focus on how to promote competition, investment, innovation and public-private partnerships to expand the use of information and communication technologies. The event will be broadcast live on the Web site of CITEL.
Between Tuesday February 11 and Thursday February 13, in the same location, the Sixth Regular Meeting of the Assembly CITEL will be held. The inauguration of the Assembly will take place on Tuesday morning and will be attended by the President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina and the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, among other authorities.
During the plenary of the Sixth Assembly, participants will debate the CITEL Strategic Plan and the Operational Structure 2014-2018, the Declaration of Santo Domingo, and the election of the new officers of the commission, whose term will run until 2018, when the Seventh Assembly meets.
