OAS Promotes Adequate Management of National Arsenals
January 24, 2011
Representatives from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, Mexico and the Dominican Republic will meet in Guatemala City this Wednesday, January 26, until Friday, January 28, 2011, under the leadership of the Organization of American States (OAS) to share good practices and identify effective measures that ensure the appropriate management of national arsenals.
Furthermore, the two-day meeting will address techniques for the destruction of weapons and ammunition that have become obsolete or are in a poor state, and will conclude with a practical demonstration of a mobile system developed by the OAS to destroy weapons and ammunition. The system allows for the safe destruction of ammunition, explosives, and pyrotechnic devices, and will be used for the first time in Guatemala before it travels through Central American to Costa Rica, where it will be used to destroy 700,000 units of ammunition at the end of 2011.
The inaugural session, at 9:00 local time (15:00 GMT) on Wednesday the 26th in Barceló Hotel, will be open to the press. It is not necessary for interested journalists to obtain prior accreditation. Representatives from the OAS and the ministries of defense and foreign affairs of Guatemala will be present.
