PERU HOSTING WORKSHOP TO SPOTLIGHT IMPLEMENTATION OF INTER-AMERCAN CONVENTION AGAINST CORRUPTION

  February 11, 2008

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the government of Peru are jointly organizing a workshop that is scheduled to be held February 14 and 15 in Lima, Peru, on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption.

Slated to be held at the Hotel Meliá Lima, in the Peruvian capital, the conference will cover, among other topics, the Inter-American Convention against Corruption and member state implementation of the treaty’s Follow-up Mechanism (MESICIC); content and scope of reports on MESICIC; and submission of Draft Plan of Action for implementing MESICIC recommendations.

Jean Michel Arrighi, Director of the OAS Department of International Legal Affairs, will inaugurate the meeting, along with Peru’s Minister of Justice Rosario Fernández Figueroa and Chief of Peru’s National Anti-Corruption Office, Carolina Lizárraga Houghton.

The Draft Action Plan to be submitted at the workshop identifies specific steps that need to be taken in order to implement recommendations made by the Committee of Experts; Government institutions, offices or agencies responsible for implementation; estimate of costs and resources needed; timetable for execution and indicators concerning anticipated outcomes and verification.

The workshop is being held in response to OAS member states’ requests for assistance to implement the provisions of the Convention and, in particular, the recommendations by the MESICIC Committee of Experts.
