BOOK “GREATER AMERICA” TO BE LAUNCHED AT OAS

  January 16, 2004

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Council of the Americas are jointly hosting a booking signing and reception next Tuesday, January 20, to launch Ronald Scheman's new book "Greater America."

The event will be held at the OAS Headquarters, at 6:00 p.m.

In this his fourth book, Scheman, who is Director General of the OAS Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD), argues that “failure to confront the growing social pressures and the explosive financial plight of Latin America’s emerging new democracies can easily cause further turmoil in the Americas.” To avoid such an eventuality, the author strongly urges the U.S. to heed the lessons of Europe and Asia and strengthen its economic ties with its southern neighbors.

The book recommends that the best way for the U.S. to achieve stronger ties is by adopting a forward-looking policy toward Latin American issues, one that will enable the Latin American nations to withstand the challenges of global competition and increasing trade, as well as curb the drug traffic and the illegal migration to the North.
