New Permanent Representative of Bolivia Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Bolivia to the Organization of American States (OAS), Jaime Aparicio Otero, today presented his credentials to the Secretary General, Luis Almagro, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

The representative of the transitional government of Bolivia announced that his country is preparing hold presidential elections with observation by the international community. "“We are going to convene presidential elections for May 3, 2020. Thanks to the support of the Organization of American States and the European Union, these elections will be clean and transparent," said Ambassador Aparicio.

For his part, Secretary General Almagro highlighted the work of the Organization in the last general elections in Bolivia. “The work carried out by the OAS General Secretariat in Bolivia makes it clear that the principles and values of the Inter-American system – defense of democracy, peace and human rights, among others – are not dead letters, and that the Organization plays a key role in their defense,” said the OAS Secretary General.

On November 20, 2019, Aparicio Otero was named Special Ambassador designate to the OAS.
