Vatican Representative Presents his Credentials to the OAS Secretary General

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received Archbishop Francis A. Chullikatt, Apostolic Nuncio, who presented his credentials as Permanent Observer to the hemispheric organization.

Secretary General Insulza and Archbishop Chullikatt - who is also the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations (UN) - discussed the political situation in the hemisphere, where three of the nations with the largest number of Catholics in the world are found: Brazil, Mexico and the United States.

The OAS Secretary of External Relations, Alfonso Quiñonez, and the OAS Director of the Department of International Affairs, Jorge Sanin, took part in the meeting, held at the organization's headquarters in Washington, DC.
