The Organization of American States (OAS) and the University of Sao Paulo (USP) today signed a cooperation agreement to assist the study center in the development of tools and training for observing the upcoming electoral processes in Brazil.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, recalled that on May 15, the USP, in coordination with the OAS Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO), inaugurated the first National Electoral Observatory in Brazil. "We are convinced that Brazil will benefit from this initiative that will open a space for citizen participation in elections in a plural, objective and technical manner," said Secretary General Almagro.
For his part, the Rector of the USP, Vahan Agopyan, said the agreement is based on the accompaniment of the elections that are essential for democracy. "Our students will benefit from the unique opportunity to work with the OAS," Rector Agopyan added.
The OAS observed the general elections in Brazil for the first time in 2018.
