The Permanent Representative of the United States to the Organization of American States (OAS), Carlos Trujillo, today assumed the Chair of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) and highlighted the importance of the entity to advance the objectives of the fight against poverty and inequality.

Ambassador Trujillo stated that “CIDI is vital to the mission of the Organization. Security, peace and democracy are tall orders if we do not tackle the development goals of CIDI such as eliminating extreme poverty," and said that during his tenure CIDI will focus on issues related to women's entrepreneurship, mitigation of natural disasters and the promotion of competitiveness.

For his part, the outgoing President of CIDI and Permanent Representative of El Salvador, Carlos Alberto Calles Castillo, recalled the "high commitment" with which his country assumed the leadership of CIDI early in 2018 and reiterated the conviction that “sustainable national, regional and hemispheric development is an undeniable necessity in fighting poverty, exclusion and discrimination in all its forms.”

The Ambassador of Panama, Jesús Sierra Victoria, assumed the Vice Chair of CIDI.
