The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Minister of National Security of the Bahamas, Orville A.T. Turnquest, in his office in Washington, DC. Minister Turnquest recently left his post as Chair of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) after a one-year mandate.
Secretary General Insulza congratulated Minister Turnquest for his “excellent work” at the head of the OAS body in charge of preventing and fighting terrorism in the continent, and said he felt “very happy with the role CICTE has played this year.” He also reiterated the importance to the Organization of the issues assigned to CICTE. “The situation of public security is very complex in some of our countries, and organized crime is a great concern for us,” he said.
In the last 12 months, CICTE trained 3,500 officials on antiterrorist measures and closely collaborated in the process of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD).
During the meeting the two authorities also analyzed different ways of intensifying collaboration between the OAS and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to strengthen the efforts of each in the fight against terrorism and improving public security in the Americas. They also analyzed the situation of public order in Haiti in the context of the elections programmed for March 20. The Minister from The Bahamas thanked Secretary General Insulza for his “tremendous support” in the last year and confirmed that it was a “wonderful experience” to work with the General Secretariat and its public security arm.
Minister Turnquest was replaced as Chair of the CICTE by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, the Environment, and Export Development of Grenada, Karl I. J. Hood. The CICTE held this week its Eleventh Regular Session at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.
