The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Secretary General for Defense Policy of the Spanish Ministry of Defense, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civis, who was accompanied by other officials from that division and by the Permanent Observer of Spain to the hemispheric organization, Ambassador Javier Sancho.

At the meeting, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, participants discussed issues on the current hemispheric agenda that are also relevant to the OAS, including the situation in Haiti a year after the earthquake, efforts to succeed in reinstating Honduras to the hemispheric body, the situation of security and crime in Central America and the Caribbean, and the humanitarian demining efforts in which Spain has been supporting the OAS. In this context, the representative of the Spanish government announced that in upcoming days a series of training sessions will be held near Madrid for demining experts from OAS Member Countries.
