The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, held an audience today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Roger Haroldo Rodas Melgar. During the meeting, which took place in the office of the hemispheric organization’s topmost representative, the Guatemalan minister presented a letter requesting the OAS oversee the general elections of the country in the second half of 2011.

The letter highlights the experience of the OAS in electoral observation missions in other countries of the continent, and on behalf of President Álvaro Colom asks for support in “accelerated diagnostics with an emphasis on areas, such as the Civil Registry, the System for Biometric Identification, the System for Document Printing, as well as in performing audits of the systems, processes, databases, and financial and administrative areas of the institution”. Moreover, the letter asks for a “permanent presence of the OAS from this moment until the celebration of the next general elections”.

In turn, the Secretary General was grateful for the confidence Guatemala has in the Organization he represents, and gave all his “support not only for the execution of these elections, but also for the entire process of this democratic exercise”.
