The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Congress of Puebla signed an agreement today to promote transparency and accountability in legislative management with the aim of promoting greater proximity between citizens and legislators in this Mexican state.

OAS Assistant Secretary General Nestor Mendez said the agreement seeks to respond to the call by the peoples of the Americas for greater transparency from their leaders. "The OAS remains committed to supporting this process, and we hope that this initiative will be seen as an example and can be supported by other Mexican states and other countries in the region," he said.

The Chair of the Board of Governors of the State of Puebla, Jorge Aguilar Chedraui, stressed that the Work Plan agreed to will open the doors of transparency, accountability and modernization of communication with all sectors of Mexican society. "The agreement is very significant for us, we are going to do the utmost to advance the commitments we have agreed to here," he said.

The agreement will be implemented through the OAS Secretariat for Strengthening Democracy.
