The Permanent Representative of Ecuador, Marco Albuja, today assumed the Chair of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) of the Organization of American States (OAS) with a call to focus on human development priorities.

The Ecuadorian ambassador asked member states to show political will and said that the Council needs new initiatives to advance in the development of individuals and of the peoples of the Americas. "Talking with the Caribbean is totally different to talking to Central America, South America or North America, the needs are totally different, but all aim for a final goal that is the integral development of the human being," he said.

The outgoing Chair of CIDI, and Permanent Representative of Dominica to the OAS, Vince Henderson, said that it is necessary to rethink the work of the Council in order to achieve development goals. "CIDI, as we all agree, is a very important institution within the OAS, and we have to continue focusing on development, especially bringing development to the rural poor and people who are usually underserved and excluded from mainstream society."

During the ceremony, Ambassador Albuja presented a plaque to Ambassador Henderson in recognition of his performance at the head of CIDI.
