The Organization of American States (OAS) will cooperate with the Profuturo Foundation, an initiative of Telefónica and the “La Caixa” banking foundation, to implement in the Caribbean region the “Digital Classroom Project,” which offers a technological solution to bring digital education to hundreds of thousands of children and young people in the Americas.

The OAS - through its Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL) and Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) - and Profuturo today formalized the cooperation through an agreement signed in the framework of the Ninth Ministerial Meeting on Education in Nassau, Bahamas.

CITEL Executive Secretary, Oscar León, said, “CITEL and Profuturo are working hand in hand to improve the quality of education, through digital education in highly vulnerable areas in Latin America and the Caribbean.” Also signing on behalf of the OAS was SEDI Executive Secretary Kim Osborne.

For her part, the Director General of Profuturo, Sofía Fernández de Mesa, highlighted that the implementation of ITCs in education allows for a broader coverage, which leads in turn to greater quality at lesser cost, while at the same time democratizing access to information, and improving access to opportunities for all.

Through today’s agreement, the OAS and Telefónica call on the countries of the Caribbean to take part in the activities of the Digital Mobile Classroom, starting in January 2018. The program is an offline platform that aims to improve quality education through digital resources that provide access to quality and transformational education, creating more inclusive spaces and focusing on the enhancement of teacher skills, methods and competencies through digital technologies.
