The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received Lilian Tintori, wife of the detained Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López, who requested an audience to explain the legal conditions of the processes facing political prisoners in Venezuela.
During the meeting, Tintori, who was accompanied by relatives of other detained people, delivered details of several open processes against opposition leaders and elaborated, specifically, the details of the process facing her husband, which in her judgment suffers from flaws that do not meet the standard of due process.
Lilian Tintori asked Secretary General Insulza specifically to intercede to achieve the freedom of Leopoldo López, who she said is guided solely by the goal of achieving changes within the constitutional framework of the Venezuela. The OAS leader listened to the account and offered to bring it to the knowledge of the relevant bodies of the Organization.
Likewise, Secretary General Insulza stressed the urgent need to create conditions to open spaces for national dialogue, which he deemed the responsibility of both the government and the opposition, and expressed concern about the consequences of the decision to transfer the task of controlling mass demonstrations to the armed forces (Resolution 008610 of the Ministerio del Poder Popular). On this issue, he expressed strong opposition to such measures, noting that they only polarize the Venezuelan domestic situation and do not work toward the pursuit of common ground in the divided society of the country.
