The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today participated in the opening of an exposition of images by the Argentine photographer Gustavo Germano entitled “Ausencias,” which will remain open until December 11 at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington DC.

Upon inaugurating the exposition about those “disappeared” by the Argentine dictatorship between 1976 and 1983, Secretary General Insulza highlighted that “it is a remembrance of a tragedy, but also of the living; and it contains the hope that those who remain, with the memory of their loved ones will be able to build a better society.”

The Permanent Representative of Argentina to the OAS, Nilde Garré, explained that the exposition is “a denunciation, and also a call for reflection, and another construction in the process of memory, truth and justice.” The Ambassador of Argentina to the United States, Cecilia Nahón, emphasized that the exposition “shows that Argentina, the region and the world say ‘never again’ to human rights violations like those that took place in our country.”

Both diplomats called for universal respect for human rights and said no one should forget what happened during the Argentine military dictatorship, so that episodes of pain and death like those experience in the South American country never be repeated ever again, in any country.

Numerous representatives of OAS member states attended the opening of the exposition.
