The new Permanent Representative of Canada to the Organization of American States (OAS), Stuart Savage, presented his credentials today to OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro during a ceremony held at the hemispheric institution's headquarters in Washington, DC.
Secretary General Almagro recalled that since joining the OAS in 1990, Canada "has played a fundamental role in the evolution and modernization of the Organization." "Its efforts and contributions have strengthened the four pillars of the OAS, as well as the quality of its overall administration," added Secretary General Almagro.
For his part, Ambassador Savage highlighted the diversity of the OAS and called on member states to "continue to engage around old and new issues that challenge us." "The inter-American system has demonstrated, more than once, and will do so again, that it is up to the challenges of today's world and that together, cooperatively, we can achieve and help lead the way for the world, not only here in the Americas, but around the world," added the Permanent Representative of Canada.
Ambassador Savage was his country's representative in Haiti and Guatemala, High Commissioner to Belize and has also served in Canada's missions to Pakistan, Spain, Mexico, Cuba and the UN in New York.
