The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa Etienne, at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

Secretary General Insulza and Director Etienne discussed the drug situation in the Americas, and the perspectives for treating the issue as a question of public health. The "Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas," prepared by the OAS under the leadership of Secretary General Insulza; and the PAHO report entitled "Drug policy and the Public Good" were the subject of discussion between the two authorities, who agreed to deepen their joint work in this area. PAHO plays a prominent role in the Hemispheric Plan of Action 2011 of the OAS Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD).

The OAS Secretary for External Relations, Alfonso Quiñonez; the Executive Secretary of CICAD, Paul Simons; and the PAHO Director of the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, Carlos Santos Burgoa all took part in the meeting.
