The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Guatemala today agreed that the Central American country will host the IX Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and Highest Authorities of Culture, on October 27 and 28 in the city of Antigua.
The Minister of Culture and Sports of Guatemala, Felipe Aguilar, said the meeting will allow the implementation of actions to ensure that culture becomes an engine of economic development in the Americas. "The signing of this agreement carries an enormous responsibility, which is why with the full support of the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, we reiterate our commitment to be hosts to culture and to a peaceful and harmonious society," added Minister Aguilar.
For his part, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro recalled that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on creative industries, especially in centers and facilities such as theater, live music, festivals, cinemas and museums. "We hope that the Ministers of Culture will be able to reach agreements for the development and strengthening of the cultural sector and the creative industries in the Americas," said Secretary General Almagro.
The central theme of the ministerial meeting will be "Technology, creativity and innovation as opportunities for the development and strengthening of culture."
