The Dominican Republic will donate digital photography equipment to the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) of the Organization of American States (OAS) to digitalize works of art in the Museum´s collection, according to an agreement signed today in a virtual ceremony.
OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro said that for the Museum, the donation "is a step forward for its democratization, by making it´s art accessible to everyone." "Donations such as this one allow us to continue advancing our mission and vision of promoting the art of the Americas through cultural diplomacy," added Secretary General Almagro, who signed the agreement at the OAS offices in Washington, DC.
For his part, the Dominican Republic's Deputy Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy, Rubén Silié, who signed the agreement from Santo Domingo, said the goal is to digitalize the artworks in high resolution, as well as "the identification of archival material, key to the museum's art history and the field of Latin American art history."
When the museum was officially inaugurated in 1976 the collection had 250 works. Today the collection has more than 2,000 objects in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, installations, prints, drawings, and photographs.
