The Organization of American States (OAS) commemorated the unveiling of a plaque designating its Washington, D.C. headquarters as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. National Park Service at a ceremony on April 12.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro said it was “gratifying” to see the designation of the Organization's headquarters as a National Historic Landmark, "the highest level of recognition for a historic site in the United States." "The classical and global styles of the building are perfectly suited to the work of our Organization, which is based on our four main pillars: democracy, human rights, security and development, and which are objectives shared by our host country," he added, referring to the building, founded in 1910, which features a fusion of ancient and colonial architectural styles from various parts of the Americas and Europe.

For his part, the Interim U.S. Representative to the OAS, Bradley Freden, thanked the National Park Service for the National Historic Landmark designation. "From Andrew Carnegie's original donation to construct this building to the present day, the OAS building has stood as a symbol of unity, democracy and cooperation. Its location of the building here, just across the street from the National Mall, demonstrates the deep connection the United States maintains with the OAS. The symbolism could not be clearer, we deeply value this connection to our hemisphere," said the U.S. diplomat.

Meanwhile, U.S. National Park Service Director Chuck Sams explained that the designation recognizes "the meaning and beauty" behind the classical architecture and landscape and the fusion of Western and Mesoamerican designs and motifs. "Also the important work the Pan American Union and the Organization of American States have undertaken here, building meaningful international relationships throughout the Western Hemisphere," Director Sams added.

The OAS headquarters was inaugurated in 1910 and served as the headquarters of its predecessor organization, the Pan American Union, until 1948, when the OAS was created.
