The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, said today in Barbados that reforming systems of political financing in the region to make them more transparent and increase accountability “is not only our duty, but our obligation.”

The Secretary General addressed a conference in the Forum on “Strengthening Political Party and Campaign Financing Reform in the Caribbean,” in Bridgetown, in which he said the current lack of regulation “can create inequity” and “affect the independence of parties.” The Forum, co-organized by the OAS with the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), brings together 42 participants, representing electoral management bodies as well as governing and opposition parties from 14 Member States from the Caribbean, to discuss strengthening the regulation of political parties and political financing in the region.

During his visit to the Caribbean country, the Secretary General will be received by the Prime Minister, Freundel Stuart; the Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite; the Foreign Minister, Senator Maxine McClean; and the leader of the opposition, Mia Motley.
