The Organization of American States (OAS) today hosted a meeting of experts to discuss model legislation on firearms, within the framework of the Inter-American Convention against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives and Other Related Materials (CIFTA).

Specifically, the experts from the Member States discussed model legislation, which may be adopted by the countries, on security measures to eliminate loss and diversion of firearms, ammunition, explosives and other related materials, and on recordkeeping, confidentiality and exchange of information on the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in the same.

CIFTA was adopted in 1997 as a regional instrument for the control of the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms. The Convention established a Consultative Committee constituted by a representative from each State Party in order to guarantee its implementation, to promote the exchange of information, to facilitate cooperation and to foster training between countries.
