Uruguay as Host Country Presents Tenth Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas

  May 12, 2011

The Brigadier General Jerónimo Cardozo, Director of International Affairs at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uruguay presented last week before the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) details of the Tenth Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas (CDMA), to be held in his country in the second half of 2012.

The representative of the Uruguayan Ministry of Defense said in a meeting with the leaders of the IADB, that “in our opinion, the defense goes to support the sovereign efforts so that, in pursuance of the Constitution, to protect the rights of our citizens to own a decent roof, a functioning health system and education that will enable us to compete in this increasingly important area of knowledge."

The CDMA was created to provide a forum of debate for the countries of the Hemisphere and thereby increase cooperation in the areas of Defense and Security as outlined in the Williamsburg Principles. In the context of this forum, the authorities responsible for the defense in the Americas discuss topics such as confidence and security building measures, peace support operations, civil-military relations, and emerging threats such as transnational organized crime and terrorism.

In 2009, the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) charged the IADB with the responsibility of being the technical secretariat responsible for maintaining the institutional record of the ministerial process.
