OAS Salutes World Press Freedom Day

  May 4, 2011

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today commemorated World Press Freedom Day during a regular session held at Organization headquarters in Washington, DC.

On behalf of her fellow ambassadors, the Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Grenada to the Organization, Gillian Bristol, recalled that freedom of expression “is a fundamental human right. The Inter-American Convention on Human Rights, in Article 13, very clearly speaks to that, as does the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Article 19.”

“We denounce any and all acts that restrict or deny such freedom of expression and lament the deliberate taking of lives of journalists or anyone who would wish to express their own opinions. Freedom of expression is one of the pillars and ways in which our democracies are marked,” Ambassador Bristol said.

Representatives of the following countries also took the floor during the meeting: the United States, Panama, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Guyana (on behalf of CARICOM), Nicaragua, Venezuela, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Paraguay; they highlighted the value of freedom of expression in democracy building.

At the same session, the Permanent Council also elected Fernando Gómez Mont Urtea by acclamation as a new member of the Inter-American Juridical Committee, replacing his fellow countryman Jorge Palacios Treviño, who stepped down for personal reasons.
