OAS Secretary General to Travel to Grenada and Participate in CARICOM Meeting on Haiti

  February 25, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, will travel to Grenada today on an official visit to the Caribbean country, where he will also participate as a guest in the biannual meeting of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to be held in St. George’s on February 25 and 26.

The head of the OAS will hold conversations with the Caribbean leaders on the most recent events in Haiti, and on the second round of elections to take place in that country on March 20. Also a subject of analysis will be the strong collaboration between the OAS and CARICOM in their Joint Electoral Observation Mission (JEOM), which has followed the presidential and legislative elections and will follow the second round of such voting in Haiti.

In the context of his official visit, Secretary General Insulza will meet with Grenada’s Prime Minister and current CARICOM Chair, Tillman Thomas, and with the Minister of External Relations, Karl Hood. During his stay until Sunday the 27th, the OAS Secretary General will also hold bilateral meetings with other CARICOM leaders to discuss issues specific to their countries and other current affairs in the region.
