The Organization of American States (OAS) and the National Electoral Court of the Republic of Argentina (CNE for its Spanish acronym) signed today a Supplementary Agreement that will allow both institutions to strengthen their already established cooperation in electoral matters. In representation of OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, the Director of the Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO) of the Secretariat for Political Affairs, Gerardo de Icaza, signed the document together with President Emilio Rodolfo Munné, representing the Argentine electoral body.

During the ceremony, the Director of DECO stressed the role of the OAS in electoral matters. “The OAS has observed elections in the region for more than 50 years and we are proud of our observation tools”, he said.

De Icaza also mentioned that the OAS is constantly working on the improvement of electoral observation tools. “We are in the process of developing a Manual on electoral disputes mechanisms. The collaboration with institutions such as the CNE will allow us to develop a strong set of tools to observe electoral justice matters. Others areas of collaboration in the agreement include quality management and certification against ISO norms, the analysis of political rights of citizens deprived of freedom, and electoral federalism.

Meanwhile, the President of the CNE, Emilio Rodolfo Munné, who was also accompanied by the Judges of the Tribunal, Santiago Corcuera and Alberto Dalla Via, emphasized the importance of international cooperation for research. The President also highlighted the importance of solutions that promote the quality of electoral administration and of the electoral justice in complex scenarios that countries with federal systems encounter.
